I don’t know if you are like me. Let me tell you my story.

While I was working for my employer I had several goals in Mind.

• Progress my career – through promotion
• Earn More – Salary Increments

I was able to achieve the said goals for a limited time and then much later I realized I needed more money so that I can be secure financially and be able to achieve my dreams. A nice House, good education for my kids, travels on vacations and so on. As for me I would that I get rich and do better than I was doing then. I remember my economics teacher telling us that the nature of man is Insatiable. You will never get satisfied with what you have or achieve i.e. when you get to some level you always want to get higher than where you’ve reached at the time. While the later is true, every one of us wants to get to some level where you can at least meet your daily needs without strain, food, shelter, energy (fuel, gas) and nice clothing. Thereafter, you want to comfortably associate with your friends and maintain some level of respect i.e. be able to pay for drinks, attend and contribute comfortably to social functions (Weddings, house parties, funerals e.t.c) without burning a hole in your pocket.

I did the math with my salary and trust me my salary was not enough to meet the minimum financial independence and achieve my dreams at the same time. I did a plan to raise my education bar so that at least I can get a fatter salary than I was getting. To have an loan for my second degree, some minimum deposit was required from my saving, but then I was like Why do I need a second degree that I’ll pay for on loan and am not guaranteed to get a pay rise or a newer highly paying job?

The other day I was having coffee with an employer and he was planning on cutting costs for his company. At the time I wanted to know what was in his mind and how he was planning to cut the costs. Of all the methods of cutting costs I will dwell on the option of laying-off his staff. In summary he told me that he would have to retrench the older (Longest Serving Employees) staff. I was shocked, as to why one would want to suck the more loyal and experienced staff in his organization. To my surprise the reasons he gave might as well give you a rude shock. I quote

“Experienced and long serving employees are hard to maintain, they need more money and benefits to be motivated, while new entrants will work hard for less so that they can be confirmed, be promoted or get a pay rise”.

The above statement could have been made by your employer, am sorry if am the one breaking the news to you. That’s how the world is like: it’s cruel and doesn’t run by our wishes. You therefore need to be as innocent as a dove and as shrewd as a serpent.
