The Curse of Being a CEO | Don’t Aspire to be One

Most People aspire to be the CEO (Chief Executive Officer) of a company and they treat it as the prime dream for their career. I have great respect for these “C” class employees, I have seen some take bold decisions and turn around firms into profitability. Most of them have done great things that inspire young people and propel them to work hard to copy their success. This kind of spirit is highly encouraged in any society. We should actually give a moment of silence and respect to the CEO’s they drive the economy and they step us to the next level of productivity. Without CEO’s may be the economy would run to the dogs and we appreciate the work they do.

If there are all those praises to be sung about CEO’s then, why the controversial title for this article?

I’ll tell you a little story of a CEO’s Life.  They are respected and adored in society and they have more friends than most people. But something happens when they retire. Their friends retire as well. Here is why… As a CEO you have access to things, connections power etc. Therefore you’ll get more and more people drawing closer to you so as to tap from your resources e.g. get business from you, get a job for their sons and daughters or just plainly eat your money.

The Curse of Being a CEO | Don’t Aspire to be One

Unlike most of the times we call our friends to celebrate our graduation but I have not heard about celebrating retirement and if there is may be very rare cases. The reasons still remain hidden and no one share about it. The media people cease their attention from the Former CEO as (s)-he’s no longer influential and their opinion no longer matter to the country’s economy.

I don’t want to go to the detail but you can imagine what this does to their Self Image and Esteem, I mean, your “friends” run away from you, the media ignores you, the people who were making numerous visits to your office but would not get the chance to see you no longer care and all the attention is gone. Even painfully, at the time of retirement your children have already left the house or are in university, so you have no one to spend time with. While you were away your wife joined the women organization and she’s rarely in the house, it’s sad to say but her Women friends gave her comfort when you were out on numerous trips and this way she found herself a place in the society independent of you.

The Curse of Being a CEO | Don’t Aspire to be One

To be put through such humiliation is painful, but A CEO will always fight back, he will remember he led big firms into prosperity. He does the smart thing of starting a consultancy firm. He comes with his amorphous ideas of running multinational business that have 30 to 100 year old brands into his start up business. But the rules are different here, the small play differently from the big and he again fails miserably… He closes the business and moves upcountry a disappointed man. That’s what we do when we fail; we go back to the roots.

The Curse of Being a CEO | Don’t Aspire to be One

Now in upcountry something good happens, the former CEO has a good reputation and respect from the people. It rekindles her esteem, what the city deprived him after retirement. He feels good about it and now ventures into politics aspiring to be a councilor or Member of Parliament. It’s a good dream and worth the try and he therefore bets his remaining retirement benefits and even gets a loan against his house in the city and confidently ventures into politics.

Our old man campaigns for the seat, he dishes out money to his would be electorates. What he forgets is the circle of ten to fifteen people in his campaign team are just eating his money and singing the praises of fools. After all, the rest of the community is bitter with the “CEO”, they painfully remember when they came to your office seeking help but you were too busy to see them (and honestly you were), but they didn’t understand and they are still bitter with you and you are getting none of their votes.

The Curse of Being a CEO | Don’t Aspire to be One.

A good thing about you can be shared to five people over time but a bad thing can spread like wildfire to tens and even hundreds. So by now you can guess, he loses the Political seat and is in more debt than when he started. He gets bitter by day, he has no hope and that’s the last kick of our Almighty Stallion, which accelerates him to the death bed. CEO I respect you even if they didn’t reciprocate your Good Works R.I.P.

I know these are hard truths and bitter pills to swallow… But would you rather know the truth and do something about it while its daylight or would you rather continue in living in a lie and seek comfort in denial on your way to the death Spiral.

But there is Hope… A lot of it and you can turn things round at any age and time.

Here if how…

Firstly, let me ask you.

Q: Would you like to be a Chelsea Manager or would you like to own the Chelsea Club?

A: Chelsea Club Owner.. You answered right.

Congratulations, you are now developing the right attitude to dictate a future for yourself.

The main difference between the CEO and the Entrepreneur is: One runs a System while the Other Owns the System.

I would like to be the one owning the system. The system has continuity in it but the Job has an expiry in it, dictated by your years, it takes the better part of your heydays and leaves you bitter thereafter.

Please note, am not advocating you to quit your Job, but see it differently. See your 8 to 5 as an investment, as a product that you sell to your employer and get equally compensated for it.

My Advice: The moment it hits 1701hrs start thinking of how you can develop your system or your business in this case. I know it’s hard to run a business and even harder to run a profitable one. Running a business from start to 5 years is the hard part but from there onwards it can run by itself or with little involvement required from you. It will be a fully fledge system where you can hire the best talent to work for you, A legacy that you can work on and look upto even when you are 70, even better your family can continue to run it. In third generation it will be a top brand like Coca Cola or Ford.

Barrack Obama noted that Education and Innovation will be the greatest equalizer of our time leading us to more opportunity and prosperity regardless of which corner of the world you are in. The Internet provides such a platform.

Way back in 2006 when I started my research on how to make money online is when I realized that it’s possible to run a business system without running a Business on  mortar and brick. This was very convenient for me as I punch the 8 to 5 I could get an extra hour at home and make money on the internet.

I started with an opportunity called AdSense, where you post content on a website on any topic and then your attract loyal readers, this way you create traffic on the internet, and as you know in the offline world, where there is traffic there is advertisements. So I partnered with Google and allowed them to advertise on my web log. The opportunity was not very promising as I could make an average of $5 to $7 per week so it took me 4 to 5 months to get my first $100 Check from Google.

While I was an online publisher something else was happening to me and the results were getting realized in the workplace. I had changed my thinking from being an employee to being a business owner. My ideas started to be noted in the workplace, my slogans changed, I stopped hating on my boss, I saw my 8 to 5 as an investment as opposed to doing a favor to the organization and the end of the year I was awarded the most coveted award of the most innovative employee for the year.

Back at home I continued with my online Business and I came to learn about affiliate Marketing. The first month I made over $ 250 I guess around $263 to be exact, less $15 transaction charges. All these amount with out spending a dime. The following month I got a little caught up on my 8 to 5 business and my earnings averaged to around $100 a month.

Thereafter I continued with my research and opted to learn from the best to see how I can boost my earnings to a 6 figure or even a 7 figure p.a. It’s called the affiliate classroom where Anik Singal the President of Lurn Corporation teaches his affiliate students to use online tools and software to boost their earnings to obscene levels. I tried one of the Systems in the Classroom called Pay per Click (PPC). I invested $10 in advertising and on my 4th $ I made a sale worth 25$ in commission by the time exhausted $10 I had made 50$. Not too bad right? Which shares get you a 400% return in a Span of one week? And continue that way to the end of the year. None I haven’t heard of any…

Maybe I was just lucky, but I decided to give another method that I’ll not pre-empt it here and I made $117 to be exact in three days. It’s not a get rich quick scheme remember it took me nearly 5 months to make my first $100 but it got better along the way as more opportunities came along and found me prepared.

Not to mention, I made some terrible mistakes: I almost got “deleted” from Google Search results even worse I had some problems with my ISP and further tribulations from publishers in US and Australia. You know being young and curious in a new business you are bound to make these mistakes. Especially for me I didn’t have a coach and I had to learn it the hard way. If you opt for online opportunities you are also bound to make these kinds of mistakes. But there is a way you can avoid it, by learning from the Best; you can cut via the learning curve and escape from the backlash of being a pioneer and re-inventing the wheel.

A big portion of Successful entrepreneurs were sales people at some point in their career. There are lessons to be learnt from remarkable sales persons. One, they know how to get beyond frustrations from high expectations, they know what it means to have time wasters filling your diary with meetings and not resulting to acquiring sales, they know what it means to have a successful presentation and a promise to be called and never getting the call. They know how to deal with fear of being embarrassed and not being seen to be performing. They know the painful side of running a business, they feel the heat from they prospects and from their bosses. Long live salesmen!!!

One of the Most Successful Business and Life Coach, Publisher and Author Brian Tracy: With all the Wealth and Business Systems he has built over years was faced with a difficult decision over his Son. His son had just graduated from Business school as A Financial Analyst and he sought career advice from his father. The dad told him, I know it would be easy to loan you some cash from the family savings and start your own Financial Consulting Firm but there are some lessons you didn’t learn from University there are lessons about life. He recommended that he vies for a sales job in a nearby Kitchenware company, where he had to go door to door knocking marketing and selling the kitchenware. Three months down the road he had not made any sale, all the benefits were withdrawn by his boss or he was just politely fired. “But Wait!” he said. I can do this job as a Freelance and on the second week after he made a sale. That evening he went home jumping and hugged the dad of his first sale.

Two years down the road he had risen to being a regional vice president in sales at the age of 25. He had learnt some lessons that University professor will not teach and he was ready to run his own business, his former boss would be his first client as he had developed confidence in him not forgetting his fathers empire plus other clients he had served selflessly in his career.

My point is, there are hurdles in life when you plan to run your own business, but it’s in overcoming those constraints that you move beyond the sheer beginners luck to real success and being remarkable!
